Fitzroy Stick Barometer

Price: £440.43
Quantity:

This barometer was introduced in 1860 by Admiral Fitzroy, the Captain of H.M.S. Beagle which took Charles Darwin on his voyage.

After retirement, Fitzroy became chief of the Meteorological Department of the Board of Trade and developed the world’s first weather forecasting service through The Coastguard Service.

The instrument carries Fitzroy's instructions for interpreting the pressure changes. The case is made from oak and has lacquered brass fittings. Included is a celsius and fahrenheit thermometer and Fitzroy's chemical weatherglass. Fitzroy concluded that the electrical tension caused by changes in wind direction caused a change in the character of the weatherglass chemicals. Through the rise or fall and change in colour of the chemical an indication of weather is provided.

Size: Height 1016mm (40"), Width 228mm (9")
