Serial / USB Connections

Most electronic weather stations that can be connected to a PC, output "serial" data. It is probably for this reason that many manufacturers have been slow to move over to USB connections. Furthermore most quality PCs still have at least one serial (com) port and it is usually only laptops and some budget PCs that now have only the USB option available.

Whilst the USB option is not necessarily the best solution then, for some it is simply 'what they have'.

In the TechnoLine / La Crosse Technology range several of the systems either will not -or have difficulty -working with a USB-serial adapter. This includes the WS3600, WS3500 and WS8610. We recomend that you only use these with a 9pin serial conection (com port). If you have a PC without a 9 pin RS232 connection then you can add one by purchasing an expansion card, though these are not all that cheap.

Otherwise, in the Technoline range the serial port WS2300, WS2500 and WS2307 models work fine with a USB to serial adapter, if necessary.

The Oregon WMR100 model uses a USB port, as does the
IROX Pro-X.  The Oregon WMR928 however uses a serial port connection, though an adapter can also be used sucessfully, if required.

your serial/usb connections page says that the 928 has a serial connector, however your 928 page says it has a USB

Do you supply a USB cable for the WS2300?

Although WS2300 can connect via a USB/Serial conversion cable, when running MS Vista the Heavy Weather software can't find the coms port so Vista prevents the download any data from the WS2300 into your software programme (HW or whatever you're using). I'm still seeking a solution.

I have had this problem the software can't find the com port, I have found that on my laptop I can't access any COM port with the adapter less than COM 6 but the software doesn't allow higher COM port Numbers.

Serial solutions: We have a La Crosse WS3600 which worked OK with our old computer. However, our new computer, which was far from being a cheap model, did not have a serial connector. I don't know if the suggested solution (buying a card with a serial conector) works. What does NOT work is buying a cheap adaptor which plugs into a USB port and has a serial connector into which the WS 3600 is plugged. I have felt very disappointed at the lack of interested displayed by La Crosse in solving the problem.
