Weather Software for Apple Mac

Apple Macs are in a minority so no one has, or is likely to, develop serious software for this platform. There are some free/shareware apps available for Mac (and Linux/Unix) but Davis stand alone with WeatherLink for Mac.

However this is not a perfect solution. Whilst it worked fine with the Classic systems with Vantage Pro it only works with the standard sensor options and is missing some other functionality that is included with the Windows version. Connectivity is also an issue. WeatherLink for Classic stations is supplied with a round keyboard type plug and requires a KeySpan USB adapter. The same was true for Vantage Pro but now this version comes with USB. Still not perfect because currently WeatherLink for works OK on an iMac up to OSX 10.4 or on a  Mac up to OSX 10.5.

The solution to use WeatherLink on an Intel Mac is to use the WeatherLink with serial connection for a PC with a serial-to-USB adapter which comes with drivers for an Intel Mac.  The Mac software will need to be downloaded (free of charge) from www.davisnet.com

Alternatively WeatherLink will work in Windows on a Mac (or at least an Intel Mac) either in Boot Camp or Parallels. Our preference would be to go with Parallels as this allows you to carry on working on your Mac in OSX if you want to keep your weather station software running live.

If you are using a station with a 9 pin serial connector then use a USB adapter from  someone like easysync.co.uk with the windows drivers. Otherwise if you have a USB device such as WeatherLink then the drivers supplied should work fine but watch out for updates. We have noticed though that our WeatherLink USB adapter needs to be plugged in after Windows has started for it to be recognised.

With Davis WeatherLink we would recommend buying the Windows USB version and running it in Parallels. If in the future Silicon Labs release a USB driver then you can migrate to the Mac version that is a free download from Davis' web site. That is of course if you won't miss any loss of functionality.

Note:-

Boot Camp is a Beta for OS 10.4 available as a download from apple.com. You will require a copy of Windows XP SP2.

Parallels is available from parallels.com. You will require a copy of Windows, we have tested XP SP2 but 98SE or better may work.

WeatherDisplay32 will run OK but causes a Windows crash on exit. Problem is being investigated.

Here I sit running Leopard 10.5.4, Parallels 5608 and Davis 14.0 software gathering information from a Vantage Pro2 6163. It works and works well. My info is uploaded to Wunderground. Yes, Microsoft was first, and has millions of machines running their software, but most users of any time will tell you to stay with XP, Vista is a can of worms. If that is indeed the case, some developers better start paying attention to Apple, before they are surprised with another iPhone of sorts. It's time for all the 'wizards' to take Apple seriously.
